Use the Right Storage Units

This may seem like an obvious point, but there are so many different types of shelving out there that it’s possible you may end up with one that isn’t suitable.

We’ve already broken down a list of what shelving is best for different purposes, but from a retail perspective you need to think about the actual items you’re selling. Are they bulky? Are they tall? All these factors will play a part in making sure that your stockroom is efficient and items are easy to get to in a fast-paced environment like retail.

Discount or Discard Old Items

One of the biggest culprits taking up space in a stockroom are old items that are unlikely to see the light of day again. Spend a day clearing out clutter so that you have plenty of room to store products that are flying off the shelves.

If possible, offer them at a discounted rate on the shop floor to create less waste. If they’re seasonal items, such as Christmas decorations, then store them all together in one section of the stockroom so that they’re easy to get to when it’s possible to sell them again.

Not making use of all the space in your stockroom is one area that can provide inefficiency. Even if you don’t feel as though you need all that room straight away, it allows for you to grow your range quicker as you already have the room to store it.

Ideally, you should buy the tallest possible shelving the first time around so that you don’t have to expand or buy new shelving at a later date. If you find yourself in this predicament now, and want to expand your space without moving offices, then buy nearly new shelving so that your bottom line doesn’t take a big hit.

Add a Note Taking Area

A fast-paced environment like retail often doesn’t allow time for you to speak to colleagues when you’re in the middle of serving a customer. If you have a stockroom issue that you need to share, it can easily be forgotten.

Add a place to leave important notes for other staff so that you’re in no danger of it slipping your mind – it could be as simple as placing a cork or white board on the back of the stockroom door.

We hope this has inspired you to make a few tweaks that will make a big improvement to your stockroom. If you’re looking for shelving units to really benefit from your space, then contact us today on 020 8998 9247 and a member of our friendly team will be happy to help.
